Congratulations! You’re almost done the novel! For this task, I’d like you to think back to your initial discussion about theme. What were the themes that you chose? Do you still agree with those choices? What themes would you add? Find an important passage or quote from the novel that you feel relates to 2-3 of the themes that you have chosen.
The themes that our group chose were war, trust, perseverance, loyalty and love. I agree with all these themes at this point of the book. The theme of war make sense because the book takes place during world war 2. The theme of trust is also a good theme because at first max was scared of Liesel because she might reveal him to the Nazi, but Liesel and Max learn to trust each other. Perseverance is also a good theme, mostly for Max, because he has to be steadfast when staying in the basement for long periods of time. Loyalty and love also make good themes because Hans is loyal to the Vandenberg's because they saved his life, for love to be a theme is very obvious because there is a lot of love going around between Liesel and her parents along with Max. I would add the theme of kindness because Liesel and her father Hans are very kind, and they do kind things in this section of the book. A good passage from the book that shows good examples of the themes kindness and love is; "Whenever she walked to and from school now, Liesel was on the lookout for discarded items that might be valuable to a dying man. She wondered at first why it mattered so much. How could something so seemingly insignificant give comfort to someone? A ribbon in a gutter. A pinecone on the street. A button leaning casually against a classroom wall. A flat round stone from the river. If nothing else, it showed that she cared, and it might give them something to talk about when Max woke up." This passage shows Liesel's kindness towards Max when Max was very ill. She found different gifts to give to Max when he was unconscious, and she believed that the gifts would make him wake up. The passage also shows the theme of love with Liesel’s love for Max.
